WMD began in 1979 by serving missionaries already working in Puerto Rico. Since then, other Christian works among the Deaf have been added, some for a short term and others longer. For example, WMD had a relationship with the Cayo Deaf Institute in Belize, a Mennonite Deaf school. Further, WMD has responded to requests from other organizations for consultation and help, including the Christian Mission for the Deaf founded by Dr. Andrew Foster.
Over the years the number of missionaries serviced by WMD has also changed. In some cases the works are supported through agency agreements where the work is carried out by national workers. In other cases Canadian missionaries have gone to assist in the works, as commissioned workers sent by their churches and served by WMD.
