Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, east of the Dominican Republic. Here are two sources of information about Puerto Rico that you may find helpful:
WMD is currently supporting ministry in Puerto Rico at:
  • First opened as Evangelical School for the Deaf in 1959 by missionaries from Jamaica, closed in 1969 then re-opened in 1971 and has continued today. In 2013 the school was renamed to Christian School and Chapel for the Deaf, Inc., in accordance with revised government regulations in Puerto Rico.
  • Worker(s): Betsy Hoke, from the US, since 1984
  • Other short-term volunteers from the United States and Canada help in various ways by contacting the school directly. While not officially missionaries of WMD, your prayers on their behalf are always appreciated.
  • Support opportunities: general help to the school budget, missionary support

Evangelical Church and Center for the Deaf, in San Juan (Hato Rey)
  • Began in the 1960's, established in a permanent location in 1986 and has continued to today. Regular services for the Deaf weekly. Today the Pastor is David Rawlings, son of retired missionaries Roger and Pamela Rawlings. David is President and CEO of Sign Language Interpreters Inc, a successful business providing interpreting services on the island.
